“The Journey of the Bear”

This painting is inspired by an unforgettable journey through the Alexander Archipelago in Alaska and a special encounter with a member of the Tinglit clan. Together, we explored the wilderness, searching for black bears, seals, and salmon returning to their birth grounds to spawn. During our adventure, my guide revealed the rich traditions of his clan, the native inhabitants of this part of Alaska.

In this enchanting environment, totem poles were traditionally made, each with unique animal symbols and stories that reflect the strength, courage, and family bonds of the clan. The bear, a central figure, symbolizes strength, courage, and protection. The colors black, red, and blue-green on the totem poles and ceremonial artworks represent respectively strength and connection with ancestors, the earth and life, and water and the transition between worlds.

This painting captures the essence of this journey and the deep connection with nature and ancestors. It is a tribute to the Tinglit clan and their rich cultural heritage.
